Phelps in running to face Warriors

Hull FC: Coach Richard Agar has not ruled out throwing new signing Cameron Phelps straight into Sunday’s squad for the game at his former club Wigan Warriors.

The Australian utility-back is set to arrive in the next 24 hours after finally sorting out his visa problems.

Phelps, 26, signed a deal with Hull last month but had been unable to leave Sydney due to red tape issues.

He spent two-and-half-years at Wigan, scoring four tries in six games last season, before being released and is now bidding to resurrect his Super League career at the KC Stadium.

Hull travel to face the champions at the weekend and Agar said: “We’ll see how he is when he gets here.

“That should be Monday or Tuesday and we’ll assess his fitness and see how he bares up after the flight before making a decision towards the back end of the week about whether he plays.

“It’s good to have him here now and we’ll see how he goes.”

Agar, meanwhile maintained he was only interested in doing his best for his team after seeing the pressure on him eased with Friday’s 42-18 win over Crusaders.

Three straight losses at the start of the season had left him under pressure from the club’s fans to resign, with some going as far as setting up a website calling for his dismissal.

Brian Noble, one of the names touted by the home fans as a potential replacement for Agar should he leave, was, by chance, watching the game from the stands, but Agar insisted the only pressure he had been feeling was from himself.

“If you know me, you know I will always continue to give my best and, if the time came where we didn’t think we were going forward...I’ve been in the game a long time and it’s not something I lie awake thinking about. I just want the team to improve,” he said.

“In the week we had a chat and said we were going to have our best week and lead by example as a coaching staff. After three losses from three there was going to be speculation about my position, I understand that.

“I don’t think there’s a coach in the world in any sport that won’t go through what I’m perceived to be going through now.”
