Pig vet's leading role

North Yorkshire vet Nigel Woolfenden, is the new president of the Pig Veterinary Society – a division of the British Veterinary Association.

Mr Woolfenden, a partner in the Bishopton Veterinary Group, Ripon, moves up from the vice presidency to take over from Wiltshire vet Peter Bown.

He said one of his priorities would be support for the campaign for clearer labelling on the origins of pork.

He said: "UK welfare standards are amongst the highest in the world, denoted by the Red Tractor logo on pork, ham and bacon. The UK has led the rest of the EU in sow welfare for over a decade and the voluntary adoption by the major supermarkets of a new code of practice is welcome.

"I would ask all consumers, including the UK Government, to support welfare through the pig products they purchase."

Mr Woolfenden is a member of the three-vet pig division within his 15-vet mixed practice.
