Players will be rested as Trinity continue to struggle

WAKEFIELD Trinity Wildcats coach Richard Agar certainly has one eye on their Challenge Cup tie at Leeds Rhinos after resting a host of players for the Super League trip to Wigan Warriors this afternoon.

Struggling Wildcats are looking to respond following the disappointing 34-16 Good Friday loss at home to Castleford Tigers which came quickly on the back of a 36-0 reverse at London.

However, Agar is wary of expecting too much from his players over the busy Easter period and has given several of them time off today.

The pressure on his squad is greater still given their forthcoming fourth-round cup game at Headingley Carnegie is the only tie held on Friday, meaning they have 24 hours less than most to recover from the taxing holiday period.

Agar is already without Richard Mathers (ill), Ali Lauitiiti (hamstring), Danny Kirmond (calf), Matt James (calf) and Dean Collis (hamstring) but a number of others are rested this afternoon. The likes of ex-Harlequins hooker Andy Ellis, former Hull FC star Motu Tony and Frankie Mariano get chances to impress along with youngsters Danny Cowling, Russ Spiers, Lucas Walshaw, Matty Wildie and Liam Kay.

Regarding the Castleford defeat, Agar said: “I’m obviously disappointed that we lost a derby match to our nearest rivals.

“It was an improved effort individually but we struggled too often to get out of our own half. I have to give credit to Castleford; their defence was very good. Our execution, in attack and in defence, didn’t match what we have been trying out on the training field. Some individuals showed an improvement on the display at London but injuries are costing us. I don’t think we’ve gone through a game yet in which we’ve not lost an ‘edge’ player.”

Meanwhile, Trinity have issued a statement following reports of trouble at the match.

It reads: “The club would like to thank the vast majority of supporters from both clubs who helped generate a fantastic atmosphere at the game and their behaviour was befitting of a sport and a club that prides itself on being family friendly.

“The club are aware of and are investigating a small number of incidents that occurred involving a minority of individuals at Friday’s game and will take the appropriate action if necessary once the investigations have been concluded.

“Wakefield Wildcats take a zero tolerance approach to foul and abusive language .”
