Potter pleased with ‘step forward’ but remains cautious over Bulls bid

Bradford Bulls head coach Mick Potter last night welcomed a much-anticipated bid to buy the cash-crippled club but urged the powers-that-be to take their time in deliberating the offer.

Administrator Brendan Guilfoyle is expected to update the Rugby Football League today on details of the proposal.

The bid from the ABC consortium – a group of Asian businessmen – is conditional on the prospective new owners buying back the lease of Odsal and the Bulls retaining their Super League status, which could prove problematic.

Potter, working on a voluntary basis since being made redundant almost three weeks ago, told the Yorkshire Post: “It’s not a relief as such as it doesn’t mean the bid will be successful.

“But it is a step forward and the RFL and administrator will now get a chance to have a look at it.

“Obviously, we’d all like to see it done as soon as possible – the Bradford fans and the rugby league community – but I’m sure there’s a lot of things to consider.

“I wouldn’t want anyone to make a rash decision because they feel under pressure from us.

“We want the right decision to be made to give us the best possible way of being a Super League club.”

Guilfoyle labelled the next few days as “critical” as deliberations get underway in what is likely to be a drawn-out cat-and-mouse affair ahead of next Friday’s deadline before liquidation occurs.

Guilfoyle said: “The ABC consortium, the RFL, the administrators and professional advisers for all parties will be focused on trying to get a deal over the line.”

Potter, meanwhile, says he has not applied for the London Broncos head coach position for 2013.

“At this stage I’m not interested,” said the Australian.

“They’ve got Tony Rea in as an interim coach and I want to see this through here at Bradford.

“I can carry on (unpaid) until the end of the month which takes us to the end of the administration too. I’ll make a decision then.”

The RFL will meet this morning to decide how many points Bradford will see deducted for breaching insolvency rules.

The squad should know the outcome ahead of tonight’s Super League game at Leeds Rhinos as they seek a fourth successive win but Potter added: “We won’t let that affect us, whatever happens.

“The players will just go out and do their best as always.

“I think form counts in these derby games because form is confidence.

“Both Bradford and Leeds are feeling confident in their own ability and the last couple of times we have played them they have been really entertaining games.

“I wouldn’t like to predict the outcome but Leeds are a formidable side and they have some quality players that win big matches and take the crucial points for them.

“Kevin Sinfield is the mastermind for them, then you have Rob Burrow, Danny McGuire and Ryan Hall; all players that win games.

“They will be favourites and it is a big task for us but it’s not impossible. We have already shown what we can achieve this year.”
