Promoting a country career

MORE than 1,000 school pupils from across the county attended an event to get more high calibre candidates involved in the UK's farming industries.

Secondary school students had the chance to get "hands on" at the popular Countryside Careers event at the Great Yorkshire Showground, Harrogate.

This is the fourth year of the event which showcases rural careers, ranging from becoming a vet to learning to be a jockey to dry stone walling, with this year's event attracting a record attendance.

Nigel Pulling, chief executive of organisers the Yorkshire Agricultural Society, said: "The Countryside Careers event is a great opportunity for young people to learn first hand about the opportunities to work in the rural sector.

"Like any industry, agriculture needs to attract recruits of all calibres, including high flyers, those who are highly motivated and students with a passion for outdoor life. We want to encourage young people to see a career in the rural sector as an exciting option."
