RFL back Hull in on-off Connor transfer saga

HULL FC are likely to demand a transfer fee for Jake Connor if Huddersfield Giants continue in their bid to keep the talented 21-year-old next season.

The Rugby Football League last night publicly confirmed that the utility back is, indeed, registered with the Airlie Birds for 2017 following a protracted row over the in-demand player.

Hull announced last month that Connor had signed with them on a two-year deal starting in December.

Huddersfield felt they were due up to £100,000 compensation if he did switch due to his age but their rivals insisted they owed nothing given the player will be 22 when he moves to the KC Stadium.

However, Connor confided to Hull on Tuesday that he had actually had a change of heart, wanted to stay with the Fartowners and had agreed a new deal with his current employers.

While understanding the youngster’s predicament and why he may have had second thoughts, Hull feel they are within their rights to seek a considerable sum themselves if Huddersfield do persist in trying to keep their Academy product.

Furthermore, as the governing body has now supported their stance, they remain in a position of power.

It would be deeply embarrassing for Giants if they had to stump up any money for a player who is still in their own ranks and without him ever even having pulled on a Hull jersey.

It seems, therefore, Connor will now be at the KC Stadium next season - unless one side softens its position.

Meanwhile, Hull captain Gareth Ellis is back for the Super League leaders’ home game with Leeds Rhinos on Friday night along with Jamie Shaul and Liam Watts after they all missed Friday’s loss at Huddersfield, a first defeat in 11 games.

They replace Jansin Turgut, Curtis Naughton and injured second-row forward Frank Pritchard.

Australian hooker James Segeyaro is set to make his debut for Leeds.

He signed last month as part of a swap deal with Penrith Panthers which saw Zak Hardaker head the other way.

Leeds coach Brian McDermott has Jordan Lilley and Ash Handley recalled to his squad but England second-row Brett Ferres misses out with a foot injury.

Rhinos have terminated Beau Falloon’s contract by mutual consent.

The Australian hooker had played just 10 games since joining from Gold Coast Titans last October.

Falloon, 29, has failed to make a lasting impression with his performances and it was agreed to cut short his 12-month deal with Segeyaro now on board.
