RFL ready to benefit with Sharp in new role

Ex-Hull FC player Sharp had joined the organisation on a consultancy basis, having previously worked as part of the coaching set-up with Great Britain, Hull FC and – last season – as Brian Noble’s assistant at Crusaders.

RFL chief operating officer Ralph Rimmer said: “Jon is a coach and former player with considerable experience whose contribution as a consultant will complement the work already being done at the RFL.

“His presence, together with other changes that have been made internally since the end of last season, demonstrates the RFL’s determination to raise the bar in everything we do.”

Sharp will advise Super League match officials on playing trends within the game and offer them assistance from a coach’s perspective. He will also serve on the RFL’s disciplinary panel.

Wigan have tied brothers and England internationals Joel and Sam Tomkins to new five-year contracts.

Second-row Joel Tomkins, 23, whose current contract was due to run out at the end of the season, and full-back Sam, 21, who had four years left on his deal, have both committed to their home-town club until the end of 2015, ending any realistic chance of either player moving to Australia or rugby union.

York City Knights have taken Castleford forward John Davies, 20, on a season-long loan and signed his Tigers team-mate Nathan Massey, 21, on dual registration.

Hull KR and Wales prop forward David Mills has been given a 12-month contract with Championship club Leigh after impressing in pre-season trials.

The son of former Widnes, Wales and Great Britain forward Jim Mills did not feature for Hull KR last season but spent three months on loan to Harlequins.
