Rhinos in the pink over health issue

Leeds Rhinos will wear a pink shirt in Friday's Super League game against Huddersfield Giants to try to raise health awareness among their male supporters.

The Rhinos will wear a new-look one-off kit for the Headingley Carnegie game of navy and pink to draw attention to the need for male supporters to consider the risks they face.

The game comes at the end of National Cancer Awareness week and the campaign will raise awareness of cancer and share simple steps everyone can take to reduce their risk of ill-health in conjunction with club sponsors Leeds Building Society and national charity Cancer Research UK.

The shirt also features a tribute to Leeds legend John Holmes, who sadly lost his battle with cancer in 2009, and a percentage of money raised from sales of a limited edition replica of the shirt will go towards good causes nominated by the Holmes family.

"We have a lot of male supporters, particularly in the high-risk age ranges," said Rob Oates, Leeds Rugby commercial director. "We want them to enjoy watching Leeds Rhinos for many years to come and want them to think seriously about their lifestyles.

"For a number of years now, we have been working with Leeds Met and the Change 4 Life team to offer advice and screening at our home matches, which has been a tremendous success. We really want to bring home the message of looking after yourself."
