Rhinos wait on McGuire news after picking up knee injury

LEEDS RHINOS were last night sweating on the injury of influential stand-off Danny McGuire after he was stretchered off with a knee ligament injury in their dramatic victory over Wigan Warriors.

The injury happened with just seconds remaining and in the build-up to Pat Richards's missed penalty which would have handed the Warriors a narrow victory.

"He's not too good," said Rhinos coach Brian McClennan, who is already missing big names like Jamie Peacock. "He's got ligament damage in his knee.

"We need to find out what happened. He's been felled off the ball and we're unsure what's happened there. The camera didn't stay on him long enough."

Leeds, who had hooker Danny Buderus put on report for a dangerous tackle on Paul Prescott, recovered from their slow start to run in tries through McGuire, Ryan Hall, Scott Donald and Buderus.

"We didn't get out of the blocks well," said McClennan. "They were playing some good footie.

"I thought the team showed a lot of fortitude and composure with the way we fought back. We didn't look at the scoreboard, we just concentrated on putting some plays on.

"I thought Greg Eastwood was very strong, creating breaks down the middle, and our little guys jumped on everything. It was a good game to watch."

Wigan coach Michael Maguire is confident his side can bounce back.

"It was painful," admitted Maguire. "It was really tough to take. We've a group in there who are very disappointed but we're very focused now on what needs to be done.

"You can't always write the script you want. We need to re-group."

Richards, who last week equalled the record for most points in a Super League season, was off target with two other late penalties that would have taken the tie into sudden-death extra time but Maguire refused to blame his winger for the defeat.

"I don't want to focus on what happened at the end," he said. "It's about what we did for the whole 80 minutes.

"We had opportunities but unfortunately didn't take them. It could have gone either way, it just fell the wrong way.

Stand-off Paul Deacon (groin) is a major doubt for Friday's Hull KR match. Wigan may also have a worry over the availability of England second-row Joel Tomkins, who escaped a sin-binning for kicking out at McGuire but could face a disciplinary hearing if the League decide to charge him over the offence.
