Robins are quick to act on word of former hero Gene

Hull KR have continued their long relationship with Papua New Guinea by signing two more Kumuls internationals – Enoch Maki and Francis Paniu.

The Robins famously introduced Stanley Gene to English rugby league after he starred here for Papua in the 1995 World Cup.

Back then, they also signed strapping centre John Okul and, in more recent seasons, saw PNG prop Makali Aizue wear the red and white too.

Current Papua New Guinea captain Neville Costigan had already signed for Hull KR from Newcastle Knights ahead of next season and now he is joined by two of his World Cup colleagues.

Hard-hitting prop Maki and second-row Paniu are from Papua New Guinea’s domestic competition and join the Robins on the recommendation of the legendary Gene, who is now on the East Yorkshire club’s coaching staff.

Robins fans might get their first glimpse of them, as well as Costigan, when the Kumuls play France and Samoa in the World Cup at Craven Park.

Both signings are subject to international clearance.

Leeds Rhinos have agreed to release prop Richard Moore from the remaining year of his contract to enable him to sign for another club next season.

Ex-Wakefield Trinity Wildcats front-row Moore re-joined Rhinos in 2012 from Welsh side Crusaders having originally been part of the club’s academy system alongside Rob Burrow, Ryan Bailey and Danny McGuire.

The former Bradford Bulls player has struggled to hold down a regular place, though, given the consistency of Jamie Peacock, Kylie Leuluai and Ian Kirke, together with the emergence of England Knights international Brad Singleton.

Leeds coach Brian McDermott said: “He’s been a great servant to us over the last two years, and having made 16 appearances in both seasons it shows the contribution he has made.”

“We appreciate his desire to secure more game-time and wish him well for the future.”
