Ryan Brierley calls on Huddersfield Giants to learn lessons fast

Rick Stone’s error-ridden side were vanquished 52-16 at Wheldon Road on Friday, shipping 36 points in an alarming second half that leaves them without a win in five games.

They head to St Helens this Friday with just two victories from their opening eight matches and many disillusioned supporters already fear being left marooned in the Qualifiers for a second season running.

Scrum-half Brierley, who scored a 90m solo try and kicked two goals after being recalled for the banned Danny Brough, said: “The second half was a disgrace.

“The first five minutes when we conceded back-to-back tries killed us. I can talk all day about structures and processes but at the end of it every single one of us wasn’t good enough in that second half.

“We have to apologise to the fans who came along.

“It’s not what this club demands or what it deserves.

“We really did let ourselves, the coaching staff and the fans down massively.”

Talisman Brough will be available for the Saints trip but it is basic resolve and resilience Giants need right now more than his organisational quality after their woeful capitulation against the Super League leaders.

Brierley, who started out in Castleford’s academy before making his name with Leigh Centurions, admitted: “When we conceded tries in the first half there was no panic as we still felt comfortable.

“We probably felt a bit unfortunate coming in 16-4 down. But the ease with which they managed to break our line and score tries in the second was embarrassing at times.

“There’s no easy way out of this. It comes down to hard work, attitude and determination.

“We found ourselves in a struggle last year and no one gives you a win.

“No one will feel sorry for us. Cas certainly didn’t.

“They put us to the sword and there were some harsh lessons out there. We need to learn and learn quickly.”
