Former Castleford star Chase set up two tries for Josh Griffin and others for Niall Evalds and Junior Sa’u with dazzling skills.

Hull fought back from an early 10-0 deficit to lead 18-16 early in the second half but were undone by Chase’s artistry.

Evalds also scored two tries for Salford before going off injured, with Mason Caton-Brown also carried off on a stretcher after a sickening collision with Mark Minichiello.

Theo Fages scored Salford’s other try, with Griffin booting four goals.

Jordan Thompson crossed twice after storming runs for Hull, whose other touchdowns came from Jordan Rankin, Setaimata Sa and Tom Lineham. Marc Sneyd kicked four goals against his old club.

Hull coach Lee Radford said: “Jordan Thompson did not deserve to be on the losing side but we did not start well enough.

“We knew Salford would come out all guns blazing but they caught us by surprise and I don’t know why.

“We didn’t turn up and clocked off and it’s hugely disappointing,” he said.

“A few things went against us, with Tom Lineham’s disallowed try and Sneyd missing a kick in front of the sticks.”

Hull lost Richard Whiting with a broken hand and James Cunningham was concussed but Radford added: “There aren’t enough hours in the day to practice defending against Rangi Chase.”

It was the Red Devils’ first win of the season in front of Aussie national coach Tim Sheens. Coach Iestyn Harris, who will have Sheens alongside him for the next three weeks in an advisory capacity, said: “Rangi was superb and when he’s in that sort of form he’s world class.
