The former Hull FC, Hull KR and London Broncos front-row joins the Championship club on a three-year deal after being released by Castleford at the end of the season.

Wheeldon, 29, played 15 games for Daryl Powell’s side this year and his capture is another major boost for Sheffield as they move into a full-time operation.

Director of rugby Mark Aston admitted: “We are thrilled to have brought Scott to Sheffield Eagles.

“Scott’s professionalism, experience and undoubted quality will make him a great addition for this club and I cannot wait to start working with him.

“He has a wealth of experience and he knows what it is like to play in rugby league’s biggest games.

“After chatting at length with Scott and telling him about our plans for the future I knew that he would fit right in here.

“He comes to me with the highest of recommendations from people I respect in the game with the likes of Daryl Powell and Liam Finn giving him glowing reports.

“Scott is a terrific player and a top class pro’, he will have a massive impact both on and off the field with the club as we look to develop some very exciting young players.”

Wheeldon began his career with Hull FC and appeared for the them in the 2006 Grand Final defeat to St Helens while he also played with Castleford in last year’s Challenge Cup final loss against Leeds Rhinos at Wembley.

He follows St Helens hooker Matty Fozard, Papua New Guinea international Mark Mexico and Oldham dup Adam Neal and George Tyson as new arrivals at the South Yorkshire club.
