Sense of injustice lingers at Castleford

THE aftermath of the Gareth Thomas affair rumbles on with Castleford coach Terry Matterson suggesting a bigger club might not have been punished as severely had they been involved.

Castleford were fined 40,000 by the RFL last month after a section of fans aimed homophobic abuse at Crusaders winger Thomas in March.

They are in the middle of appealing the size of the fine given the chanting came from a tiny minority of fans and lasted only a matter of seconds.

Tigers have since identified and banned three supporters for their roles in the incident but Matterson feels his club may have been treated disproportionately compared to others.

"The little man has been hit again," said the Australian, ahead of Sunday's crucial home game against Wakefield.

"I just wonder whether if it was one of the bigger clubs the same fine would have been handed out – but that remains to be seen."

Another Super League coach has also spoken out with Harlequins chief Brian McDermott lambasting the RFL disciplinary committee's decision to hand Bradford's Paul Sykes only a two-match ban for a "spear" tackle on Oliver Wilkes.

"Do we really have to wait until someone is put in a wheelchair before we stop classifying spear tackles as on a par with a mis-timed head-high challenge or two men letting their emotions spill over into a punch-up?" said McDermott.

"Two of these offences will bust your lip or break a nose at worst. One will break your spine and ruin your life."

Leeds hooker Danny Buderus is expected to return against Huddersfield tomorrow night – just a week after thinking he could be missing up to a month with a knee injury. Ali Lauitiiti and Kylie Leuluai are also back in the champions' squad.
