The game was the second half of a double-header under Eagles’ new ground-sharing arrangement with Wakefield.

The pitch had been badly cut-up during Trinity’s 12-8 defeat by Hull earlier in the day and Eagles handled the conditions much better than the French visitors.

Toulouse started well and went ahead when Rhys Curran nipped over from Anthony Marion’s pass.

But there was no conversion and Eagles weathered the storm to dominate the rest of the opening half, scoring three tries to take a 16-point lead into the break.

Lachlan Burr, the loose-forward who joined Leigh after Bradford Bulls’ collapse and is dual-registered with Sheffield, stepped through from close-range and Simon Brown converted.

Then Matty Fozard’s pass picked out Matt James and he went over for a try which Brown improved before landing a penalty to make it 14-4.

Fozard barged through on the final play of the half and Brown maintained his 100 per cent record with the boot.

Sheffield’s defence was tested as Toulouse looked for a way back into the game at the start of the second half, but they held firm and struck on the counter-attack when Menzie Yere went over and Dane Chisholm added the extras.

Bastien Ader’s try, converted from wide out by Mark Kheirallah, gave Toulouse hope and they struck again through Kalausa Leha following some individual brilliance by Stanislas Robin.

But Chisholm made the points safe with a penalty goal, seconds after missing with a similar effort and his pass picked out Garry Lo to seal a fine win in the final moments.
