Shenton returns to Castleford roots as Millward starts rebuilding task

Castleford Tigers have started their preparations for 2013 by announcing a deal that will bring England centre Michael Shenton back to the West Yorkshire club.

The exciting 25-year-old emerged through the Castleford Academy before going on to make 153 appearances and international recognition.

He joined St Helens at the end of 2010 on a three-year deal and scored a try in their Grand Final loss to Leeds Rhinos last October.

Shenton departed with a serious elbow injury, however, a loss that was widely considered to have helped swing the game in the champions’ favour.

He has recovered well this term but, with Huddersfield Giants coach Nathan Brown taking over at Saints next season, it is understood Shenton was made available to help free up space on the salary cap for new signings, Hull FC centre Jordan Turner expected to be moving to Merseyside as his replacement.

Castleford coach Ian Millward has now secured him on a four-year contract and he said: “Michael is a quality centre who is very much a current international.

“He has experience of playing in a Grand Final and it is brilliant news for the club both on and off the field.

“For him to make the decision to go back to Cas’ over quite a few other clubs is a big vote of confidence for us going forward.

“Not only are we getting a quality player, he comes with a mentoring role and he brings experience that we’re looking for.”

Shenton’s capture for next season is likely to be the first of many as an overhaul takes place at the Probiz Coliseum.

Hull KR centre Jake Webster and Hull FC scrum-half Jamie Ellis are thought to be next up as Millward begins reshaping his squad following a disappointing campaign so far.

Meanwhile, Danny Kirmond has taken over as Wakefield Trinity Wildcats’ full-time captain after Steve Southern asked to be relieved of the armband to concentrate on his own game.

Australian forward Southern has struggled to reach his best since moving from Newcastle Knights last winter.

Kirmond, 26, had previously been his deputy, but full-back Richard Mathers has now been made vice-captain.
