South Wales 20 Doncaster 41: Doncaster return with the spoils as Scorpions tamed in South Wales

Doncaster showed why that they are battling for top spot in Championship 1 as they muscled their way to a win at South Wales Scorpions.

The Welsh side battled in places, but discipline let them down and they were also on the wrong end of a number of very debatable decisions.

Scorpions took the lead from their first attack, Aled James charging through the defence to ground. Reece missed the kick.

Doncaster’s first try came on 13 minutes. From a penalty, Grant Edwards finished off a fine passing move which Scott Spaven goaled.

Minutes later, Spaven set up Carl Hughes to dive over before Mick Butterfield went over for their third on 28 minutes. Spaven converted both.

Scorpions regained the ball and hit back straight away through James again with Reece’s conversion going in off the post.

But Doncaster addressed the balance from kick-off. Kyle Kesik with a try from dummy half with Spaven converting.

Scorpions took first blood in the second half when Steve Parry ran through from close range before the Dons went 30-14 up with a fortunate decision. They were awarded a scrum rather than being penalised for a foul. From that, Grant Edwards set up Michael Coady in the corner.

The Welsh refused to give up. After winning a penalty, Parry ran over for his second which Reece goaled.

But Doncaster sealed things with tries from Chris Spurr and Mike Emmett with Spaven also landing a drop goal in addition to his final conversion.
