The incident occurred in Saints’ 10-0 win over Castleford on Sunday and was put on report at the time.

The match review panel referred it to the RFL operational rules tribunal who tonight made their ruling on the 2018 Golden Boot winner.

His original Grade F charge of ‘other contrary behaviour’ was downgraded by the tribunal to a Grade E.

Makinson pleaded guilty resulting in the five game suspension and a £500 fine.

The 28-year-old’s previous good disciplinary record was taken into account in determining the punishment but he will miss games against Hull KR (2), Huddersfield Giants, the Challenge Cup quarter-final against Warrington Wolves and derby with Wigan Warriors.

Castleford prop Grant Millington enjoyed better success at the tribunal seeing a one-game ban overturned.

He had been charged with two separate offences during the fixture by the match review panel.

But the tribunal ruled that a caution would be sufficient punishment for a Grade A charge of dangerous contact on Theo Fages rather than a one-match penalty notice.

Millington then accepted a Grade A charge of dangerous contact on Jonny Lomax in the 48th minute - a challenge that saw him sin-binned in the game - which had not been recommended to carry a sanction.

Editor’s note: first and foremost - and rarely have I written down these words with more sincerity - I hope this finds you well.
