Starlet Ward eager to make the most of his Rhinos opportunity

BEING compared to Kevin Sinfield is normally as good as it gets for any aspiring Leeds Rhinos player.

However, when you also draw comparisons with Danny McGuire and Rob Burrow, it is easy to see why people may be getting particularly excited.

Skilful teenage half-back Stevie Ward was the talk of Headingley Carnegie after a bold and enthralling home debut for the champions on Friday.

Leeds may have lost 22-12 against Huddersfield Giants but coach Brian McDermott was quick to praise the maturity of the talented youngster, who is still studying for his A levels and only training part-time.

He likened the 18-year-old to Leeds captain Sinfield for the manner in which he confidently handled the occasion and did not shirk from taking control.

But Morley-born Ward also displayed an obvious creative spark, with his acceleration, sharp handling and trickery proving a constant worry for the Super League leaders.

It left Leeds fans seeing obvious similarities with a young McGuire or Burrow too, the injured international half-backs whose absence has seen him emerge.

“Obviously, Kev is someone I model my game on and Benji Marshall from the NRL,” Ward told the Yorkshire Post, an instant indication to the variety of his game.

“Kev, Rob and Danny are always tipping me up in training and help me to get better but I have my own way as well.

“There were glimpses where I did alright against Huddersfield and playing in front of the South Stand where I used to stand in my own spot as a lad was a dream come true.

“But I’ve got other things I need to work on and just want to improve.”

The England Academy starlet certainly did not lack confidence for someone so young, regularly demanding the ball and shaping play for the Rhinos.

Ward added: “You have to be confident really, especially at half back where you must be vocal. I think I did alright playing with Kev. He had a bit more of a leading role but I think I’m easing my way in and know I’ve plenty to work on.”

With McGuire and Burrow both battling to be fit for Good Friday’s trip to Bradford Bulls, there is every chance Ward could continue alongside the revered England star.

As someone brought up on the fierce rivalry between the clubs, he is hoping it is not the first and last time he plays at Odsal given the on-going financial plight threatening Bradford’s future.

“They’ve won Super League and the World Club Challenge,” said Ward, who will train full-time this week after breaking up for his Easter holidays. “You can’t have a team like that going down.

“Everyone is upset by what’s happening at Bradford but hopefully they can keep going.”
