Worrincy, 29, is serving a nine-month suspension after breaching the Rugby Football League’s rules on betting and is sidelined until Christmas Eve.

He admitted placing a series of bets, including on matches in which he played, between May 2012 and September 2013.

However, Sheffield have agreed to give him a one-year contract for 2015 which shows a real change of heart from head coach Mark Aston.

He was “furious” when Worrincy – who scored 27 tries during two spells between 2005 and 2008 – went back on his word on signing a new Eagles deal ahead of the 2009 campaign, signing for Championship rivals Halifax instead, and Aston said he was “finished as far as this club is concerned”.

But Aston last night said: “Rob has matured now and I’m sure he can become a fans’ favourite once again.”
