Thackray returns to help out for Broncos

Jamie Thackray, seen here in his Leeds Rhinos days, is back in the game at London Broncos.

The much-travelled forward has been playing rugby union with Hullensians in Yorkshire One but has started a one-month trial with the Championship club.

Thackray has vast Super League and Championship experience, including two stints at the Airlie Birds where he famously helped win the 2005 Challenge Cup against Leeds in Cardiff.

He started his career as a strong-running second-row with Hunslet Hawks and Andrew Henderson, who has taken over as caretaker coach at London this week after Joey Grima’s sudden resignation, believes he can add plenty to their group.

“I’ve known Jamie as a player and person for a number of years and he’ll bring a good amount of enthusiasm and understanding of the Championship to the squad we have,” he said.

“We have a depleted squad at the moment so I was keen to bring in someone like Jamie who can help us out in this situation.”

Thackray, who made 208 Super League appearances from 2000 to 2010 and won three Great Britain caps, last played rugby league for Workington Town in 2013.

Co-incidentally, the Cumbrian club are London’s opponents on Sunday.

Meanwhile, Hunslet have signed Leeds second-row Brett Delaney on a dual-registration basis and he, too, could debut this weekend.

The 32-year-old Australian underwent knee surgery in pre-season and has yet to make an appearance in 2015.

Hawks coach Barry Eaton can call on the ex-Parramatta utility for Sunday’s Championship game against Bradford Bulls.
