HULL FC forward Jordan Thompson expects his side to push on in Super League after a positive Easter but admits they have to first be on guard against Championship high-fliers Sheffield Eagles.

The Black and Whites play Mark Aston’s side at Sheffield United’s Bramall Lane ground in Sunday’s potentially dangerous Challenge Cup fifth round tie.

Eagles had won eight consecutive games before going down 36-22 to unbeaten Championship leaders Leigh Centurions yesterday and are packed with experienced players like former Bradford Bulls and England forward Jamie Langley.

Thompson, 23, said: “It will be a massive test.

“Some people may think it’ll be easy as they are a Championship team.

“But Sheffield are definite contenders for Super League so we can’t look at it like that.

“We’ve managed to take four points from Easter with wins in our last two against St Helens and then Widnes on Friday.

“That is a huge confidence boost for us and now we want to roll on.”

Hull had lost their opening game of the Easter weekend against derby rivals Hull KR but have responded well with those victories and are now just a point adrift of the top eight.

“We’re confident of pushing on,” added Thompson, the former Castleford Tigers utility who has been revelling in a back-row role off the bench, missing just one fixture so far.

“We get some troops back soon, will get some energy and look forward to building.

“I’m loving it at the moment and playing in a position I like and relish.

“That just makes you want to keep your spot and push on and grab it.”
