Three fly out to Stampede

Three Yorkshire farmers flew to Canada this week for a tour ending at the Calgary Stampede.

Jamie Leather, right, who runs a mixed dairy farm at Green Hammerton, York, and beef and arable farmers Robert Rogers, left, of East Heslerton, Malton, and David Benson, of Stillingfleet, Selby, earned the trip by winning a new Fantasy Farming competition at Askham Bryan College last year.

Working together as the Matadors, they beat other teams trying to make a profit out of rearing real calves for beef.

The Matadors are also in this year's follow-up competition, rearing calves for sale as dairy animals – watch these pages for a report on the results.

The organiser at the college, Oliver White, said: "It's extremely valuable for our students to see the different regimes."
