Trinity axe jobs as takeover edges closer

Wakefield Trinity hope to secure a club takeover this morning.

Administrators of the troubled club hope to secure a deal with the Spirit of 1873 Ltd after further talks yesterday.

Peter O’Hara, from administrators O’Hara & Co, said negotiations with Spirit of 1873 Ltd, led by local businessman Andrew Glover, were progressing towards a conclusion.

Last night O’Hara said: “I am hoping to conclude the deal with Andrew Glover in the morning.”

Since the Wildcats entered administration they have lost three players in Sam Obst, Dale Ferguson and Daryl Millard, while yesterday around 14 administrative staff were made redundant. The Yorkshire Post understands the new owners could offer the axed employees the chance to re-apply for their old jobs, but the position of coach John Kear and the club’s coaching staff is not under threat.

The RFL board of directors will meet tomorrow to give their approval of the takeover, and decide on a points deduction for going into administration, expected to be six points.

Centre Aaron Murphy last night won his appeal against the two-match ban imposed for a dangerous throw in Wakefield’s defeat by Castleford Tigers on Saturday.

The offence was reduced from Grade C to Grade A on appeal after a RFL tribunal viewed a video showing the incident from a different angle.

Fijiian international Millard yesterday joined Catalan Dragons, becoming the latest player to be sold by the administrators running the Wildcats as they wait for local businessman Glover to complete his takeover. On Monday, Hull swooped for half-back Obst and on Tuesday Huddersfield picked up second rower Ferguson.
