Trinity can rival Tigers' wingers when it comes to scoring '“ Kear

CASTLEFORD TIGERS' wingers are grabbing the headlines, but John Kear feels Wakefield Trinity's are just as impressive.

Trinity suffered a blow when 2016’s young player of the year Tom Johnstone suffered a season-ending knee injury in a win over Catalans Dragons last month, but Mason Caton-Brown has stepped into the void.

He scored a hat-trick against Catalans, one in a win over Leigh the following week and four when Trinity crushed Championship hosts Dewsbury Rams 54-6 in the Challenge Cup sixth round last Friday.

The former London and Salford man now has 10 tries in seven appearances for Wakefield and with Bill Tupou bagging a brace against Dewsbury, when another prolific try scorer Ben Jones-Bishop was rested, Kear feels Trinity are in good shape out wide.

“I like to think we play a good brand of rugby league,” Kear – Wakefield’s head of rugby – said. “You only have to look at the number of tries our wingers score.

“Everybody talks about Castleford’s wingers scoring tries, but ours aren’t bad either. It is exciting to watch and the tries Mason scored against Dewsbury were scorchers.”

Kear felt Trinity did a professional job against Dewsbury, who have won just one in the league this season. “They are doing it tough at the minute, but I thought they showed plenty of spirit and some of their on-line defence to keep us out was very, very desperate indeed,” Kear said.

“I thought they played pretty well, but we are really happy because it was professional and ruthless and we are into the next round.”

Wakefield have been drawn away to Caton-Brown’s former club Salford Red Devils in the quarter-finals.

Kevin Brown knocked his old club out of the Challenge Cup with a virtuoso performance in Warrington’s gripping 34-20 sixth-round win over Widnes.

The England stand-off was roundly booed by the Vikings fans still angry over his decision to leave them in the close season for their arch-rivals but he had the last laugh with a sensational hat-trick of tries.

Warrington will now play Wigan, who ran in eight tries as they overpowered Championship side Swinton.
