Trinity ready to heap on more ‘embarrassment’

WAKEFIELD Trinity Wildcats captain Danny Kirmond believes sides still find it “embarrassing” to lose against them.

They are hoping for a third successive Super League win as they seek to maintain their 100 per cent start at Widnes Vikings on Sunday.

Most people – if not the squad themselves – thought the West Yorkshire club would finish bottom in 2015.

Even impressive opening wins at Castleford Tigers and against Hull KR have failed to convince some critics.

“We want to change other people’s perceptions of us,” said Kirmond, as Wakefield look to stretch their winning run against Widnes to nine matches dating back to 2005.

“Even after we’ve won the first two, other coaches are saying it’s embarrassing and they shouldn’t be losing to teams like us.

“We believe we are a good team and if we keep playing that well we can challenge most teams on our day.”

So much so that the second-row admits they see no reason why they cannot push on and challenge for the top eight.

“We have had a look at that,” he said. “We take each game as it comes, but three from three would be a good start to the season.

“We thought we could compete in games and we’ve done that on the back of some really hard work in pre-season and the preparation we did for those games.

“We always seem to be tipped to finish at or near the bottom.

“But the confidence and feeling in the squad never reflects how other people perceive us and we’re looking forward to going to Widnes now.”

Trinity have agreed a dual-registration partnership with relegated Super League club London Broncos.

The move will see Australian half-back Jarrod Sammut play for London in their Championship game at Grand Final winners Leigh Centurions on Sunday.

The ex-Bradford Bulls star, 28, has failed to break into Wakefield’s side so far this term.

But Broncos head coach Joey Grima said: “I already have a relationship with Sammut having coached him at Malta. I’ve watched him play over the past six seasons in the NRL and Super League and consider him to be a valuable player due to his versatility.

“The addition of Sammut brings opportunities where we’ve been hit hard by injuries.”
