VIDEO: Injured Giant Ferres hoping for better luck than Wood

They have been hit with a big blow in losing Wood, the dynamic No9 who suffered “multiple” fractures in his foot during Saturday’s 14-12 win at Catalans Dragons.

However, vice-captain Brett Ferres, in his first game back from suspension and having already endured knee and ankle injuries this term, also had problems and may have torn a biceps.

He will see a specialist tonight to see if that requires surgery which would also rule him out for the rest of the year - and with the Super 8s set to start after Sunday’s final regular game against visiting Wakefield Trinity Wildcats.

“It’s possible Brett’s injury will be similar to the one Craig Kopzcak had the other season,” revealed Anderson, about the Wales captain who made a swift recovery.

“I think Koppy only missed one or two games and was able to play on with it until the end of the season, so we’re obviously hoping it’s something similar for Brett.

“He’s still got some fibres intact and a fair amount of strength in his arm, like Koppy did, so that’s good and he’s now been booked in to see a surgeon to determine whether he needs surgery.

“It could be a season-ending injury or he could miss this week and be back for the Super 8s so the cup’s half full at the moment.”

Huddersfield will confirm fourth place if they defeat Wakefield but they must do so without their former Trinity hooker Wood, the 26 year-old who suffered a season-ending knee injury also against Catalans in July last year.

Anderson said: “It could have been worse; our medical staff thought it was a ligament injury which would have been disastrous.

“But it’s been scanned and the positive is it’s not as bad as first feared.

“It’s still bad; he suffered multiple fractures in his foot and it is a strange one.

“He will undergo surgery Friday to have it plated and wired.

“He’ll then have the wires taken out later on and should only miss the first couple of weeks of the next pre-season.

“It’s a massive blow for him, because he showed some real spark when he came back into the side. It’s been a tough year for Woody with his knee (reconstruction) and one or two things that have gone on around him but we’re a strong group and we’ll get him through it.”

Kruise Leeming, 19, will get a chance to replace Wood against Wakefield while Australian back-row Chris Bailey is also expected to be in the 19-man squad after recovering from his own biceps injury suffered in April.
