Vikings stun Norland as Dales deny Lions

Holderness Vikings finished their season on a high after securing the Council Trophy with a 24-12 win over Norland Academy at Haworth Park.

Norland's Ben Rowen raced 80 metres to open the scoring before Jason Hogg's try was converted by Paul Blythe. The Vikings extended their lead before the break when Ali McCloud ran in a superb solo try.

Blythe continued his 100 per cent conversion rate in the second half when he goaled his own try to make it 18-8, but only after Norland's Dean Hines crashed over on 50 minutes.

Norland again closed the gap through Warren Smithies before Sam Wray extended the Vikings' lead with another converted try.

In the Bassett Cup, Bransholme Dales were victorious with a

20-14 triumph over West Hull Lions. Craig Skelton converted Mike Beecher's fifth-minute try before 18-year-old Luke Birnie raced under the posts for the Lions with Pete Grayburn converting before adding a penalty.

The Lions extended their lead to 14-6 shortly after the break when Grayson converted Liam East's 40-metre try. But Bransholme started their fightback on the hour when Beecher covered the length of the pitch for his second try.

Ant Rhodes crashed over in the 74th minute to make it 14-14 and, with extra time looming, a last-ditch push by Bransholme proved enough to clinch the trophy when Pete Sansam squeezed over the line by the corner flag to set up Skelton for a well-taken conversion.
