Wakefield begin 2011 recruitment

Wakefield have made New Zealand hooker or half-back Jeremy Smith their first signing for 2011.

The Wildcats have announced the departure of seven players but the 29-year-old Smith is their first confirmed recruit from Super League rivals Salford on a 12-month contract.

Smith, who won three caps for the Kiwis and played for the Maori in the 2000 World Cup, made 25 appearances in his first season at The Willows but started only four matches this year.

He joined Salford City Reds in 2009 from South Sydney in Australia and he has played 44 Super League games for the Greater Manchester club. He started his senior professional career in Australia with St George before moving to Parramatta Eels in 2005.

"I'm very grateful for the opportunity to come and play at this club," he said. "I have been speaking to John Kear and I can't wait to get started and get the team around the park."

Smith played for Parramatta and South Sydney before switching to Super League.

Wakefield coach John Kear said: "Jeremy is an international quality player and will add an extra competitive edge in the middle of the field.

"He's an exciting footballer and has played at the highest levels. That kind of experience will be useful as we bring through some of the younger players we're developing at Belle Vue, as well as adding something extra to our side."
