Wakefield put case for reprieve in 700-page application

WAKEFIELD Trinity Wildcats chairman Andrew Glover has promised the club will be able to challenge the game’s finest if they win a Super League licence.

The deadline for Super League clubs to submit their applications is today but Glover, head coach John Kear and commercial manager Martin Hopkins delivered their document personally at Red Hall yesterday.

With one club certain to be demoted this year, Trinity are felt to be most in danger when the RFL announce the full set of three-year licences on July 26.

But Glover – who took Wildcats out of administration last month – has urged the governing body to stick with them insisting if they do they will spend the full salary cap and become a force.

“It’s taken all the team here virtually four solid weeks to compile,” he said.

“The full document is over 700 pages, outlining our plans for the future of Wakefield Trinity Wildcats in Super League.

“If all goes as we hope, this really will be a top Super League club. We are all feeling quietly confident about our Super League future as we all believe in the product we have and the strength of the new company.

“As much as we would all like to forget about the previous company’s administration, it does have a significant bearing on our application. We just hope it’s not too much.

“Our plans moving forward do produce the sustainable business I wanted for the club, allowing us to spend to full salary cap, providing a great commercial package and, as always, delivering some fantastic work in the Wakefield community.”

England coach Steve McNamara is the latest prominent figure to back a proposed switch of the community game season from March to November.

“I think it’s really progressive,” he said. “One of the biggest positives is for the junior players to be able to practise and play in high quality conditions. I think we’ll see a standard from our juniors which will surpass what we have seen before.”
