Wakefield Trinity 14 Hull KR 46: Furious Kear to show his 'mullered' Wakefield a video nasty

PETER FOX claimed a quickfire second-half double as Hull KR struck a savage blow against Wakefield in the race for a Super League play-off berth.

Rovers went 12-0 up in the opening quarter with converted tries from Michael Dobson and Clint Newton before the Wildcats hit back through Daryl Millard.

Yet Rovers struck again on the stroke of half-time through Kris Welham and England winger Fox put them out of sight with two clinical finishes shortly after the restart.

Fox's fine brace aside, it was a largely low-quality encounter and memorable for a dreadful mistake by Wakefield stand-off Paul Cooke, which gifted his former club their second try.

Furious Wakefield coach John Kear admitted his side "got absolutely mullered".

Kear's men had beaten Crusaders 41-0 last weekend but simply failed to turn up against the Robins and were ruthlessly punished.

"We got absolutely mullered," was Kear's blunt assessment as he surveyed the wreckage of a result which put a severe dent in his side's play-off hopes.

"If we play like that we haven't got a hope in hell with the play-offs.

"That performance just wasn't play-off standard and we wouldn't deserve to be in the play-offs on the basis of that showing today."

Kear revealed he planned to relive the horror show with his players and point out their litany of errors.

"I don't think I need to point out any home truths," said Kear.

"But the players will certainly see it for themselves in pictures tomorrow and it won't make pretty viewing.

"It's frustrating for the fans. To have a job and pay your hard-earned money to come and watch that – well I would be really disappointed."

It was Rovers' first Super League victory at Wakefield and coach Justin Morgan said: "Both John and I said before the game that it was an important game in terms of getting into the top eight. It was a tough, physical match and we needed to play some smarter footie at times, but in terms of guts and determination it was way up there.

"I've got to single out Mick Vella. He doesn't always get the accolades but it was a great captain's knock."
