Wakefield Trinity boss Chris Chester says "unacceptable" performance is "same rubbish, different week"

DISILLUSIONED head coach Chris Chester accused some of his players of jumping out of the way of making tackles as Wakefield Trinity slipped to yet another dismal defeat.

The West Yorkshire club’s losing run has stretched to six matches after an abysmal 29-6 defeat at Huddersfield Giants.

Their opponents had lost the same number of successive games themselves until easing past Trinity yesterday.

“Same rubbish, different week,” was Chester’s opening gambit.

“It’s not good enough, not acceptable.

“We are in a tough spot at the minute and we are just not seeing enough fight from the players.

“Something has got to change; we are in a bit of a rut.”

Trinity were not helped by losing winger Liam Kay to a shoulder injury inside the opening 10 minutes but Chester did not use that as an excuse, conceding their issues are far more deep-rooted.

“I was really disappointed with some individuals,” he added.

“I have seen some individuals jump out of the way of tackles and that’s a first for me.

“We started the game pretty strong, again - the first 15-16 minutes, then we get to that 16th minute mark and we implode, either through a poor kicking game, poor execution or blatant one-on-one missed tackles.

“It’s really frustrating.”

Despite being at John Smith’s Stadium, it was classed as Trinity’s ‘home’ game but they cannot find a win anywhere having lost every fixture since the end of lockdown including being knocked out of the Challenge Cup.

They are now bottom and Chester - who said on-loan London Broncos prop Eddie Battye was their best player on debut - added: “This is the hardest six-seven weeks I’ve had as a coach and things don’t look to be changing any time soon.

“It’s frustrating because there’s a decent team in there. It all boils down to attitude and we are miles off - we seem further and further away from the rest of the competition.”
