Wakefield Wildcats: My view from the pitch - Kirmond

Wakefield Wildcats star Danny Kirmond provides his view from the pitch.

The words ‘Super League’s form team’ have got a really nice ring to them. Now we want to carry that on at Headingley and make it eight wins in a row.

I’ve never played in a team with the same morale as we’ve got in this Wakefield Trinity Wildcats side or experienced the sort of team spirit we have here.

I think that’s a massive reason why it has all clicked together for us. Everyone really gets on, there’s no so-called egos, no superstar players and everyone knows their role.

That’s very important that everyone does that and you can see on the field how much we do play as a team. There’s no one-man band here at Trinity.

It’s definitely been good how we’ve managed to gel but I think that team spirit and morale has helped us gel a bit quicker.

It’s a result of a lot of hard work the boys have put in. It just goes to show how good a squad we have got and how hard we’ve worked to get to where we are.

We are in really good form winning seven on the bounce. It’s a first for the club in Super League and we are riding pretty high at the minute. Everyone’s confident, the mood is pretty good and everyone is really excited to play in the play-offs.

For a lot of people it’s going to be their first such game and what a massive fixture to do it in - at Leeds Rhinos against one of our local rivals.

Such a big game can affect you two ways - you either view it as more pressure or you can look at it like we are doing which is we’ve got to the play-offs, no one’s given us a chance against the champions and what have we got to lose now?

We’ll just make sure we play our best rugby like we have been doing over the last few weeks, go to Headingley and give it our best shot. We’re all confident we can come away with a win.

I’ve been involved in the play-offs two years ago at Huddersfield. I’d been on loan at Wakefield and came back for those games. It’s knockout football and the best eight teams who deserve to be there.

They’re always massive games, you’re playing the best in the competition and it could be your last game which, when you get to this stage, no one wants.

You want to go on and on and keep going hopefully to Old Trafford. That is a massive thing to do but once you’re in that eight you have as much chance as anyone else.

Timmy Smith picked up a load of awards at our presentation evening the other night.

He is by a million miles the smartest player I’ve ever played with. Some of the stuff he does...

He just gives you confidence to do your own role. You don’t need to do anything else. As a scrum-half, he gave all the forwards a big rap for his awards saying it was all off the back of them.

But I think Timmy’s actually helped the forwards to do their roles. He’s such a smart footballer and been massive for the club. He gives credit to the team but I think the team owe him a lot for what he has done here for us this year.

It’s a pleasure to play with him and it’s a real honour to be captaining Wakefield.

I’m from Featherstone originally and my dad and grandad are both Fev’ fans.

They weren’t too sure at first when I ended up here but, seeing me as the club’s skipper now, they’re happy for me.

It’s always going to be tough against Leeds, especially at Headingley, but we’ve beaten them once this year, played well every time we’ve gone there and - like I say - it’s the play-offs now and anything can happen. It’s going to be a great game.
