Wane believes shield worthy of more respect

Wigan Warriors have warned Huddersfield Giants they have every intention of staying top of Super League until the end of the season.

They could go two points clear if they defeat the West Yorkshire club tonight and, although finishing first has not determined the champions since 1997 before the arrival of the play-offs, Wigan are desperate to secure the League Leaders’ Shield which eluded them last term.

Warriors coach Shaun Wane admitted: “It’s a good feeling to be top. We’re halfway through the season so there’s a long way to go and we don’t pat ourselves on the back here.

“We’ve got to keep our head down and keep on working. But top spot means a lot to me because I’m old-fashioned and, when I played, that was the main thing.

“It’s not held in high esteem by people now, but for me personally it would be great for us to be minor premiers this year. This is a game we want to win to go two points clear and is hugely important.”

Meanwhile, Wigan will return to the Galpharm Stadium once more this season after the Rugby Football League yesterday announced the holders will face Leeds Rhinos there in the Challenge Cup semi-finals on Saturday, July 14.

Huddersfield, however, will venture to the City of Salford Stadium the following afternoon for their semi-final against Warrington Wolves.

Both matches are televised live on BBC2, each kicking off at 5.30pm as the Wembley finalists are decided.
