Warrington 14 Castleford Tigers 22: Wolves slain as Powell hails his best ever Tigers display

The Tigers had suffered a defeat to Leeds Rhinos on Good Friday but bounced back in style to claim the two Super League points against faltering Wolves.

Powell said: “I thought in terms of courage, effort and determination that’s the best since I’ve seen at the club.

“Having to come away to Warrington in the second game over Easter having played a real physical game against Leeds on Friday – what the boys served up today was superb.

“There were some massive performances from the team considering we had a day less to prepare than Warrington and collectively, the determination they showed to keep the opposition out when you are as fatigued as you are over Easter was a massive effort. I thought we played really smart and deserved to win the game.

“We have played better with the ball. I don’t think we have defended that well and to do it in the second game over Easter to keep a team like Warrington to 14 points is an immense effort.

“To play Leeds and Warrington over Easter is a tough old battle and the best way to go about it is tell the boys it’s going to be tough and get on with it.”

The scores were locked at 10-10 in a tense second half when prop forward Grant Millington made a superb midfield break and Adam Milner was on hand to take his pass and touch down for a crucial score with 15 minutes remaining.

Three minutes later a Ben Currie charge-down bounced straight into the hand of Tigers half-back Luke Gale, who raced 60 metres to set up the position from which Ben Roberts claimed the match-winning try.

Kevin Penny gave the Wolves some faint hope with a late try but it was not enough.

It was a fourth successive Super League loss for Wolves as they continue to fall down the table.

Coach Tony Smith admitted his side were struggling but is sure they will get things right.

Smith said: “We made way too many errors which cost us today. We are not quite gelling in our combinations at the moment and it’s about us hanging in there and sticking together and working hard to turn things around.”
