Warrington keep in touch at the top

The Wolves kept the race for top spot in Engage Super League alive with a dramatic 23-16 win over Wigan on Friday night.

The Wolves were ready to concede the League Leaders' Shield had they lost, but they underlined their title credentials by coming from behind to topple the leaders and close the gap on them to just two points with five matches left of the regular season.

It was the first victory for Tony Smith's men over any of the 'big three' this season and that could be crucial if, as seems likely, they meet Wigan in the play-offs.

"We always knew we could beat those teams, this shows we can," said scrum-half Richie Myler, whose first-half try gave the visitors the lead for the first time after they endured a nightmare start.

Wigan dominated the opening quarter but only had a try from Mark Riddell to show for their efforts and they could not withstand Warrington's stirring fightback.

"We dug deep for each other," said Myler. "We defended our line well and that's what got us the victory in the end.

"We had a bit of pride in our line. We knew they weren't going to score. I think we only completed one set in about 10 and were only 6-0 down so we knew we had a chance."

A second-half try from Ryan Atkins extended the Wolves' lead to 16-6 but Wigan levelled with tries from Chris Tuson and Pat Richards.

A try from England second-rower Ben Westwood edged the visitors back in front before Lee Briers finally settled a seesaw encounter with a drop goal.
