Warrington Wolves 10 Hull FC 24: Hull catch Warrington off guard to the delight of Agar

Hull FC coach Richard Agar hailed his side for catching Warrington off guard.

Hull recovered from a 10-0 deficit to claim an impressive win at the Halliwell Jones Stadium that knocked the Wolves off the top of the Super League.

Warrington had gone into the game on the back of convincing wins over Crusaders and Salford while Hull fought out a draining derby win against Hull KR.

While that programme initially seemed to be favouring Warrington, Agar felt it ultimately worked to his players’ benefit.

He said: “To get four points over Easter, considering the sides we have played, is a really good return and to back up Friday makes it a little bit more special for us.

“Warrington are a fantastic side who are going to be there or thereabouts at the end of the year.

“Perhaps they were on the back of two 60-point wins and we were coming out of a battle on Friday.

“Possibly going 10-0 up so early might not have been the best thing for them. But taking nothing away from our boys, because while Warrington made a lot of errors, we forced them into a few of them.

“We hit hard, kept a straight line and worked our backsides off for each other.”

Agar, who faces a Rugby Football League tribunal today following recent comments about referee James Child, now prepares his side to play new leaders St Helens next week.

Agar said: “We need to recover well, we have had two massive games. We weren’t able to make too many changes and freshen people up but we have got a seven-day turnaround to our next game.

“We are not looking at the league table yet but we are aware we have still got a bit of catching up to do.”

Danny Houghton began Hull’s fightback after early tries from Joel Monaghan and Rhys Williams.

Kirk Yeaman, who scored twice against Hull KR, then claimed two more and Will Sharp added another.

Warrington coach Tony Smith said: “We didn’t handle the day as well as we would have liked. We made too many errors with and without the ball.
