Warrington Wolves 54 Castleford Tigers 30: Delighted Smith hails attacking play of Wolves and Tigers

WARRINGTON coach Tony Smith thoroughly enjoyed a 'good entertaining game' of rugby league as his Warrington side claimed victory over Castleford in their Engage Super League fixture at The Halliwell Jones Stadium.

The Wolves outscored their West Yorkshire-based opponents nine tries to five in a free-flowing spectacle which thrilled the majority of the 10,577 crowd.

He said: "There was some great attacking rugby there, it was a good entertaining game.

"For people who like to watch tries there were plenty scored. I enjoyed it, it was a good open game of rugby league for the supporters to watch.

"I'm not surprised about that, both teams like to throw the ball around and both teams have some dangerous players, both teams have been scoring some points for some time.

"We knew Cas were going to be a dangerous team, they've been dangerous all year and had won their last four games. We could have easily slipped up."

The Wolves recovered from a home defeat to Leeds with a

30-10 win over Crusaders last time out and Smith is convinced his side's confidence is quickly returning.

"There were some good signs for us there, some real positives," he said. "We took some steps last week in the right direction. We're not doom and gloom in this place.

"We set standards and for a few weeks we felt they dropped a little below our par. We picked it up a bit last week and there were some good signs there again today.

"We attacked well, really entertained and that's important for us."

Smith also insisted on singing the praises of Ben Westwood, who converted all nine of his side's scores after what has been a tricky spell for the goal-kicking second row.

He added: "I was going to walk in here and say to the lads 'who said we've got a goal-kicking problem?' It's all fixed. It's fantastic for Benny, he played a really strong game, played 80 minutes. He's working hard on his goal-kicking but it's nice for him to get a day like today, take some confidence and build on that."

Castleford coach Terry Matterson bemoaned a 'tough day at the office' as his side's four-match winning run came to an end.

He said: "It was a tough day at the office and it got a bit hard for us.

"I just think it was one game too many for us, we were a little bit too soft and did a few things wrong with the ball. In the end they were too good for us. It was one game too many.

"When you're playing a game like this you have to be stronger in the tackle, what they did in the first 10 minutes really told throughout the rest of the game."

Cas will now host local rivals Wakefield at The Jungle next weekend and Matterson concedes improvements must be made.

He added: "We need to tighten it up for the next game, we have got a massive game next week.

"We did play some wonderful football and did a lot of good things at times, but there just wasn't enough of it."
