Widnes Vikings v Bradford Bulls: Walker calls on Bradford to deliver repeat performance to sink the resurgent Vikings

The West Yorkshire club head to Widnes Vikings tonight fresh from an emphatic 43-18 triumph at Huddersfield that wrecked their rivals’ 100 per cent record.

Bradford have shown previous glimpses of such authority this term, routing Wakefield 40-6 and also inflicting plenty of damage on Castleford.

However, Francis Cummins’s side have yet to deliver consecutive wins, having fallen away from such high standards at Hull FC and against St Helens.

Walker, the ex-Great Britain centre thriving in a new loose-forward role, told the Yorkshire Post: “We’ve gone one good performance, then lost, another good performance and lost again so our goal now is to back this one up.

“We’ve been indifferent every other week and need to cut that out. We showed at Huddersfield what we’re capable of and now we have to replicate that.”

Widnes will not be the easiest of assignments. Last year’s wooden spoonists have started better this time, delivering a significant 36-16 win over Hull last Saturday which added to a victory in London.

“They’re coming in off a real good win,” admitted Walker. “Hull had shown us a lesson in how to play earlier on yet Widnes have now come up with a great victory against them. It should be another good game but, really, it’s a matter of us being consistent.”

Handling the physicality from the likes of Ben Cross, Gareth Hock and Frank Winterstein will not daunt Bradford after they softened up a notoriously tough Huddersfield pack on Sunday.

Walker, 30, explained: “Giants had been going really well and have a massive pack.

“We used their strength as a weakness; they’re a big bunch and we just tried to blow their legs off.

“With us being a bit slighter than them, we had to work hard for each other but we had a game plan and stuck to it. I was impressed with our discipline towards that.

“We got off to a flat start against Saints and were 26-0 down at the break. They punished us so it was a lesson learnt really; play quick, get off to as good a start as possible and then build your way in.

“We did that at Huddersfield and now we have to do the same at Widnes.”
