Winger Lee Kershaw aims to kick-on in Super League after signing new Wakefield Trinity contract

The player’s present deal was due to expire at the end of the current season but he initially turned down the offer of a new two-year contract.

However, he has now had a change of heart and agreed terms to remain at the Mobile Rocket Stadium until the end of 2021.

Kershaw, 21, faces a continuing battle for a place given England winger Tom Johnstone and Grand Final winner Ben Jones-Bishop are Chester’s main widemen.

Trinity have also just signed the prolific Liam Kay from Toronto Wolfpack and, while Jones-Bishop was missing at the start of the season, centre Bill Tupou often filled in out wide as well.

Kershaw scored 11 tries in 20 games while on loan at Oldham in 2018 before making his Wakefield debut with a try-scoring man-of-the-match performance against Leeds Rhinos over Easter last year.

He made six Trinity appearances in total, adding another try, but failed to feature before lockdown this term, instead playing just one Championship match for Oldham against Bradford Bulls.

“I’m happy it’s all sorted now and I can just get back to focusing on my rugby,” said the hard-running Kershaw.

“It’s been a goal of mine for a while now [to nail down a regular spot] and, hopefully, with a bit more experience behind me, it’s time to do so.”

Kershaw will be hoping to get some game-time especially when midweek fixtures start being played towards the back end of the shortened campaign.

Trinity resume against Wigan Warriors at Emerald Headingley on Sunday August 9 and have also signed France international Tony Gigot.

Chester added: “I’m delighted Kersh’ has agreed the deal.

“It’s a deal that club, player and manager are happy with.

“It’s all about being patient without rushing into things and we got there in the end.

“Kersh’ is a player that works extremely hard and I’m looking forward to seeing him kick-on in the Trinity colours.”
