Wood works for fuel demand

The Forestry Commission is offering advice to owners of 'under-managed' woods on how to take advantage of a boom in demand for wood as fuel.

The commission says the region has led the trend towards boilers burning 'biomass' and accounts for 25 per cent of installed capacity in England.

Rudie Humphrey, regional woodfuel officer, said this week: "Locally-grown woodfuel is a carbon-lean alternative to fossil fuels and will help the environment locally and globally. "

Driffield manufacturer Recycling Resources reports soaring demand for its HotBlocks, made from recycled packaging materials, because of a log shortage.

Founder Mark Horncastle, said: "Wood takes around two years to season properly so traditional supplies are going to take some time to replenish."
