Workington 33 Doncaster 6: Overnight stay fails to pay off for Cooke

DONCASTER slipped to defeat against Workington Town despite an overnight stop in west Cumbria.

Coach Paul Cooke had asked to bring the team up on Saturday for an overnight stay, determined to avoid the repeat of the opening trip to London, a day, which saw them concede 26 early points.

Although they made a strong start, and were only 8-6 behind at half-time, they were really blown away in the second period when they were unable to add to their tally.

Hard-working Paz Dunn had beavered over from close range and Dave Scott had put over the conversion on 30 minutes.

That put them right back in the contest after both Workington wingers had scored unconverted tries. Sam Forrester followed-up a grubber from Graeme Mattinson on Doncaster’s weakly-guarded right flank and then Dom Manfredi caught a high kick to the corner from Carl Forber to touch down for the second.

But the decisive try came two minutes after the break when Tom Walker burst through three tackles and sent Callum Phillips scampering over.

The hosts never looked back as Forber converted and also added the extras to three more tries.

Perry Whiteley and Karl Olstrum got over and Forber took particular delight in the fourth as he raced through and dived over to take him past 1,000 points for the club. Jamie Doran put over a drop goal to complete Doncaster’s misery.
