Workington 34 Doncaster 20: Plenty of promise on show from Doncaster

WORKINGTON TOWN clawed their way back into the Championship One play-off places with a deserved victory over struggling Doncaster, who often belied their lowly position with glimpses of promis.

But they were always struggling after Town racked up a 16-0 lead by the break with tries from captain Mike Whitehead, Jarrad Stack and Joe McKenna.

Doncaster then made the most of a string of errors by the home side. Debutant Ryan Butterfield showed he could be a forced to be reckoned with in the future, the former Normanton amateur bagging a try after benefiting from a pass from Ryan Steen before Shaun Leaf was fed a great ball by former Town star Rob Lunt to go over the line.

Simon Brown converted the first and Doncaster were back to within six points of the home side. Liam Finch got one back for Town, with new signing Darren Holt converting, then Leaf replied with his second for Doncaster, before a Scott Kaighan penalty advanced Workington once more.

A double movement denied a try for Kyle Kesick before Lee Dutton stretched Town's lead to 28-14 but not for long, good handling leading to a Chris Spurr try, converted by Brown.

Town had the final word with a Neil Frazer try and Holt's conversion just denied Doncaster a bonus point, which many may have thought they deserved.
