Workington 6 Featherstone 62: Featherstone bounce back with 11-try rout

WORKINGTON Town paid a high price for their third game in eight days when they were well beaten by a rampant Featherstone side.

There were some very tired bodies on show, particularly in the last quarter of the game when Featherstone scored four of their 11 tries.

Rovers had something to prove after their shock defeat a week ago at Swinton and clearly wanted to impress new team manager Sean Long, watching for the first time.

Featherstone dominated possession in the first quarter and raced into a 16-0 lead.

Will Sharp got on the end of a kick to the corner by Andy Kain; the excellent James Lockwood barged over from close in and Vince Mellors caught Finn’s kick to the corner to dive over the line.

Town briefly threatened a revival when Graeme Mattinson’s lovely short pass sent Jamie Thackray on a 30-metre run to the line and Kayle Connor converted.

But the Workington fightback was short-lived and, after Elliott Miller had a try disallowed for a forward pass, it was virtually all Featherstone.

Ben Kaye dived over under the posts and after the hooter, Featherstone were put on the attack by Finn’s raking penalty.

He followed up with another kick to the corner where Sharp gathered to score his second.

Rovers scored again when Lockwood sliced through for his second touchdown.

Johnny Hepworth twice sliced through to score tries in the 56th and 67th minutes; Andy Ellis burrowed over under the posts (60) and there were late tries for Greg Worthington (70) and Tommy Saxton (76).
