York close the gap on leaders after victory

York City Knights kept in touch with the League 1 leaders courtesy of a 40-12 victory over previously unbeaten Rochdale Hornets at Bootham Crescent.

The Knights chalked up a 22-0 lead following a brace of tries from Austin Buchanan plus further scores from influential half-back Danny Nicklas, who kicked two conversions and a penalty, and Ben Dent.

Kriss Brining, Josh Tonks twice and Mike Emmett went over for York after the interval, Nicklas adding the extras to the latter, while Dale Bloomfield and Jono Smith registered converted tries for the visitors.

Victory leaves York two points off joint leaders Rochdale and Toulose, who beat Doncaster
46-26.

Bastien Canet, Kuni Minga, Tony Maurel, Rhys Curran and Danny Hulme all went over for tries for the hosts, with Mark Kheirallah kicking the extras, to give them a 28-6 lead at the break. Ryan Wright’s try was converted by Tom Carr for Doncaster’s score.

The Dons then got right back into the game through tries from Zac Braham, Louis Sheriff and Sam Doherty before Toulouse stretched away again with scores from Gregory White and Anthony Marion, with Kheirallah converting. Toulouse scored again when Hulme went over for his second and Jordan Howden’s fine solo effort was scant consolation for the visitors.

Keighley Cougars enjoyed a
36-14 victory at home to Newcastle Thunder.
