YP Power Rankings - Who is top dog in Super League and who is hiding down the bottom?

Easter's double-header has helped re-shape The YP Super League Power Rankings with Wakefield Trinity Wildcats and Hull FC rightly the enjoying big moves up their table following their 100 per cent returns.

Wakefield defeating Huddersfield Giants AND then winning at champions Leeds Rhinos was huge but FC matched it with a stunning derby victory at Hull KR followed up by success against previously unbeaten leaders Warrington Wolves.

But what of Leeds….?

Their loss against Wakefield was labelled ‘shambolic’ by many onlookers and having lost at Castleford, too, it was a disastrous holiday campaign which sees them tumble to the foot of the Power Rankings - and not far off Super League’s last spot, too.

1. Wigan Warriors (+3)

The only top four side to enjoy an unbeaten Easter, Wigan were better than the scoreline suggested in their 24-12 derby triumph at Saints and then followed up with victory over Hull KR. Losing Josh Charnley and Dan Sarginson at end of the season, but that won’t trouble them now. Powering on.

2. Hull FC (+4)

The biggest movers with Wakefield and why not? Coming from 20-0 down after an hour to win at Hull KR and then backing that up with another impressive recovery to defeat Super League leaders Warrington Wolves, there is plenty to like about Hull FC currently. Big praise for Danny Washbrook whose versatility has come to the fore but captain Gareth Ellis and half-back Marc Sneyd towered against Wire, too. St Helens away on Friday will be a real examination of whether they have turned a corner.

3. Warrington Wolves (-1)

A mixed Easter. Impressing in defeating leaders Widnes in their derby but letting Hull FC off the hook when 20-10 ahead at the KC. Score might have been different if Kurt Gidley had been around. Thankfully, he should be back this weekend which will be a massive fillip for their huge game at Wigan.

4. Widnes Vikings (-3)

The surprise early-season leaders lost some of their lustre with a disappointing Easter when tested by two of the sport’s big guns - Warrington and St Helens.

That said, they were without captain and talisman Kevin Brown for both, those defeats showing just how much they do rely on the former Huddersfield and England stand-off.

They need him back soon and it has been a costly Easter with a raft of other players getting sidelined by injuries.

5. Catalans Dragons (=)

Laurent Frayssinous lapped it up over Easter by winning on the road AGAIN at Salford and following up by putting more than 40 points past Castleford.

All of which means Catalans have strung together three successive wins. With Widnes at home this Saturday, and the visitors still expecting to be without Kev Brown and Charly Runciman, they will be confident of making it four. Could they be finding consistency at last?

6. St Helens (-3)

Dropped a few places, mainly because of the stunning form of Hull and Catalans, but also Monday’s victory over Widnes failed to eradicate Good Friday’s miserable home loss to fierce rivals Wigan Warriors. It is hard to work out where Saints are heading this season. They will be tested further when in-form Hull arrive on Friday.

7. Castleford Tigers (+1)

Heroic win against Leeds Rhinos to kick-off the Easter campaign, Castleford doing so despite missing eight regulars. Injuries were always going to hit, however, especially when your Monday game is in France. Nevertheless, further credit for the emergence of Greg Minikin, the young centre signed from York City Knights who made some crucial defensive interventions on debut against the champions and then scored twice in his first full game during the 41-22 loss versus Catalans.

8. Wakefield Trinity Wildcats (+4)

Well done, Chris Chester. In his first proper game in charge of the strugglers, he oversaw a priceless win against Huddersfield but things got better still for Trinity who then ventured to Headingley and defeated Leeds Rhinos there for the first time since 2007. It is no coincidence that inspirational captain Danny Kirmond is fit-again and likewise Scott Moore, the hooker who brings so much experience, but youngster Tom Johnstone has been the star with a stunning try versus Giants and some remarkable defence on Monday. They will be glad of the trip to Salford this week is on Saturday for a little longer to rest up and Chester will be urging them to maintain their improvement.

9. Salford Red Devils (-2)

Slipped up at home to Catalans but picked up their first win in three attempts by prospering in a hard-fought game at Huddersfield. However, the ugly scenes witnessed among their fans at the end of that game brought the sport negative headlines it can do without once more. With the breach of the salary cap charge hanging over their head and now this, the club has to sort itself out.

10. Hull Kingston Rovers (=)

How good were Rovers in that first hour versus FC? Obviously, it is hard to remember that when they squandered a 20-0 lead to lose the derby but it is something to hold on to for coach James Webster. Likewise the performance at Wigan on Monday when, with three teenage debutants, they pushed last season’s beaten Grand Finalists hard. Still only one win so far but with Terry Campese and Albert Kelly hoping to be fit for Friday’s trip to desperate Leeds, they will look to repeat Wakefield’s trick.

11. Huddersfield Giants (=)

A disastrous Easter heaps pressure on Paul Anderson. Losing at Wakefield was bad enough but to then succumb at home to Salford, it isn’t good enough for a side of Giants’ calibre. Ryan Brierley has been thrust in following his move from Leigh but he will need time to adjust. Things don’t get any easier - Castleford away on Sunday.

12. Leeds Rhinos (-3)

The champions - unrecognisable from the side that won the treble six months ago - are in utter disarray. They remain competitive, at least, and let’s not forget plenty of teams do lose at Castleford. But to to wilt at home to Wakefield when in such dire need of a win, was a horrendous result. The pressure on Friday’s home game against Hull KR is suddenly immense. Will captain Danny McGuire ride to the rescue? Leeds certainly need someone. And fast.
