How many players are in a Six Nations squad?

Jones has been limited in the number of players he can pick for the England squad for the upcoming Six Nations due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Jones, currently self isolating after his assistant Matt Proudfoot tested positive for coronavirus, could only pick 28 players for the championships, and a 12-man shadow squad.

The shadow squad will be part of the same testing protocols as the tournament squad and includes Mako Vunipola, as he continues his rehab during the tournament.

The reduced numbers is the result of an agreement between the Rugby Football Union and Premiership Rugby clubs to reduce the risk of Covid-19 transmissions.

It comes at a time when the country is battling a second wave of the deadly virus, amid a third national lockdown and concerns over new coronavirus variants.

Jones has tended to pick around 34 players in previous years, which is reduced steadily as the start of the tournament draws nearer.

In comparison, France have named an initial 37-man squad, Wales 36 and Scotland 35 ahead of the first week of training.
