Former Bradford City manager Stuart McCall steps in at The Iron

He has been given the manager’s job at Scunthorpe United following the sacking of Nick Daws last Friday after just five games in charge.

Bantams legend McCall – sacked in February after a six-game losing run – will return to Valley Parade with his new charges on December 22.

The 54-year-old is joined at The Iron by assistant Kenny Black, who worked with McCall at Motherwell, Rangers and Bradford.

Andy Dawson, who was in charge for Saturday’s 2-2 draw against Barnsley, remains as Scunthorpe first-team coach.

McCall played for Bradford between 1982 and 1988 before a three-year spell at Everton was followed by seven years at Rangers. The Scotland international, who won 40 caps, returned to Bradford in 1998 and helped them get promoted and then survive in the Premier League.

He finished his playing career after three years with Sheffield United between 2002 and 2005.

McCall was assistant to Black when he began his coaching career at Bradford and he went on to coach at the Blades before returning to the Bantams as manager between 2007 and 2010.

A successful four-year spell in charge of Motherwell culminated in them achieving Champions League football for the first time in the club’s history. While there McCall also landed the Scotland No 2 job under manager Gordon Strachan and he later had a spell in charge of Rangers in 2015.

McCall returned to Valley Parade in 2016, guiding them to the League One play-off final in 2017, which they lost 1-0 to Millwall, before being shown the door last season with the side in sixth place.
