World Cup winner Erik Durm closes in on Huddersfield Town bow

The German international, 26, is the only one of Town’s five new faces yet to play ahead of the new Premier League campaign.

A need to manage Durm’s training schedule ahead of the season kicking off on August 11 against Chelsea following a succession of injuries with previous club Borussia Dortmund has been behind the absence.

It is one, Wagner hopes, that will end when Town tackle RB Leipzig in their final friendly of the summer.

“It could be,” said the Terriers chief from the club’s training camp in Austria when asked if fans can expect to get their first look at Durm in Schwaz.

“He looks fine so far. If everything goes to plan in the next days, it could be that he gets some minutes.

“He has trained with the group in more or less everything. Sometimes, maybe he has only done one session with the group and then an individual session if we had double sessions in the day. But he has looked good.”

Durm failed to make a single appearance for Dortmund last term due to injuries, the most recent being an ankle problem sustained in January.

Wagner, however, says the full-back passed Town’s medical “with flying colours” ahead of signing a one-year deal that reflected his previous injury problems.

Providing Durm gets the nod against Leipzig, he will come into a side buoyed by back-to-back wins over Lyon and Bologna.

Aaron Mooy, after being given an extended holiday following his World Cup exertions, was impressive in both those victories.

The Australian is expected to be given another hour against Leipzig alongside the other three players whose arrival back for pre-season training was delayed by the World Cup.

Wagner added: “Aaron looked good (against Bologna), Zanka (Mathias Jorgensen) did. Jonas (Lossl) had some problems, that was obvious in the 45 minutes.

“Like always in pre-season, some players adapt quicker. This can count for those who come late to training. Some need more time. I am not worried about that, it is the nature of individuals.

“But I felt Aaron, Zanka and Ramadan (Sobhi) looked good and ready – even if they need more minutes in Friday’s game.”

Elias Kachunga’s fitness will be assessed after he suffered an ankle injury late on in the win against Bologna.
