Yorkshire round-up: Derby win leaves Greens safe as Harrogate battle to beat drop

James Tincknell opened the scoring for the hosts with a try after four minutes, before George Hedgley crossed to give Wharfedale a 10-0 lead at the break.

Harry Bullough scored the hosts’ third try of the match on 45 minutes, Jamie Guy adding the extras, before Harrogate scored a penalty which proved to be their only points of the match.

The Greens are safely in mid-table in 11th place, seven points clear of Harrogate who still have work to do to pull away from the foot of the table.

Sheffield Tigers are bottom of National Two North after a 41-7 defeat at league leaders Caldy.

Nick Royle scored twice for hosts, who ran in five tries to condemn the Tigers to another defeat.

A solo effort from Pete Swatkins had seen the visitors reduce the arrears to 10-7 in the first half before Caldy pulled clear.

Elsewhere, Otley lost out 34-19 at home against South Leicester.

Hull Ionians went down to a 26-7 defeat at second-placed Plymouth Albion in National One.

Ionians trailed 19-0 at the break, but they were first on the board in the second half, James Sanderson going over with Isaac Green adding the extras.

After a competitive and tight second half, Matt Shepherd went over in stoppage-time to secure the bonus point for Plymouth and leave Ionians 15th in the table.

After their Yorkshire Cup defeat by Otley last week, Huddersfield returned to winning ways to consolidate their lead in National Three North with a 26-10 win at Lymm.

Alex Battye and Nick Sharpe scored tries in the first half, Chris Bell with one conversion, to put the visitors 12-7 up at the interval.

Second-half scores from Lewis Workman and Lewis Bradley, both converted by Bell, secured the bonus point for Huddersfield, who are 13 points clear at the top of the table.

Sandal moved up to fourth when they completed the season’s double with a five-try, 40-19 win at Doncaster Phoenix.

Three first-half penalties from 18-year-old Sam Brooke gave Phoenix a 9-8 interval lead, but they were down to 14 men when Sandal centre James Ellar crossed for the first of his two tries early in the second half.

Greg Wood converted three of the visitors’ tries as well as landing two penalties and a drop goal.

Sheffield slipped further off the pace in National Three Midlands when they were edged out 25-22 at Sandbach.

First-half tries from Rupert Broadley, Fergus Wood and Owen Smith put Sheffield ahead, but Sandbach scored a try with the final play of the match to secure victory.

Pocklington stayed top of North One East after a slender 7-3 victory at Alnwick with Karl Durkin scoring the only try.

Bradford & Bingley ran in seven tries in a 45-12 home victory over struggling Guisborough.

Malton & Norton, who were promoted with the Bees from Yorkshire One, moved further clear of the relegation zone with an eight-try, 48-7 win at bottom placed Wheatley Hills.

The tries came from eight different players, including one from winger and man-of-the-match Tom Clark.

It put Malton ahead of Percy Park, who were defeated 28-15 at home as Driffield completed the season’s double and collected a four-try bonus.

The top five teams in Yorkshire One all picked up try bonuses to maintain the status quo, with leaders Bridlington scoring a 24-3 home win over bottom placed Acklam.

West Leeds, 54-3 home winners over Yarnbury, and Old Brodleians, who beat visitors Hullensians 48-10, both notched eight tries.

Moortown, unbeaten Yorkshire Two leaders, made it a double with a 27-11 win at Wath.
